The American College of Physicians is the largest society of Internists in the world. An internist is a specialist who provides non-surgical medical care, usually limited to adults and adolescents.
The ACP includes Specialists in general Internal Medicine and also sub-specialists—Cardiologists, Pulmonologists, Gastroenterologists, Nephrologists, Neurologists, etc. Each of these sub-specialists studied to be an Internist first, and then chose a particular body system upon which to concentrate further study and procedure training.
Any Internist in good standing, whether he/she has specialized or not, is eligible for Membership in the college. As in other societies, there are Dues, Rules and Benefits.
