MAKE A YEAR OF HEALTHLY CHOICES----part 1

MAKE THOSE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS ---YES--AGAIN---IN JANUARY.  Every Attempt helps you get closer to your long term goals.

THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO SCHEDULE A PHYSICAL EXAM......AN EYE EXAM.....YOUR DENTAL APPOINTMENT

FEBRUARY IS HEART DISEASE PREVENTION MONTH!
Have you stopped smoking?
Do you know what your Cholesterol is including the HDL (good one) and LDL (bad one) components?
Are you having periods of tightness or pressure in your chest, neck, upper arms or upper back?
Do you need to schedule a stress test?

If you have general concerns about your heart we can check and ECG (heart tracing) and CRP (C reactive protein) which may indicate whether you may have heart problems in your future.

March is time to start getting more exercise. Take advantage of these warmer days to take a walk.  Eliminate second helpings to get some winter weight off. Try to limit yourself to three bites of high calorie desserts or snacks.

April is the beginning of allergy season for many.  If you are one of those, start medication early. Singular takes about 3 weeks to become fully effective. Keep bedroom windows closed if you are allergic to the outdoors.

If you are allergic to bees [hymenoptera], you should obtain a prescription for and keep an EPI PEN with you when you are outdoors.  This is an emergency injection that can save your life if you have a serious Bee allergy that makes it hard for you to breathe. Allergies are species specific: That is if you react to Wasps, honey bees will not necessarily cause you a problem and visa versa.

For the rest of you, you and your family will be spending--or should be more time outdoors.  Check to see if your dT (tetanus) booster is up to date. A booster is due every 10 years.  If you are under sixty, you should have a DAP once as a substitute for your regular booster. This has diptheria toxoid like the regular dT booster, and also pertussis [whooping cough]

June is Dairy Month, which is an excellent time to tally the calcium intake.

A grown up needs about 1500 mg of calcium daily.

How close is your daily calcium intake? Count servings of calcium containing foods you have eaten in the last 24 hours.  You can count milk, yogurt, cheese, broccoli, salmon.
Ice cream counts as 1/2.  Take your total number of servings and multiply by 300. If you get 1500 or more you are doing great! (Check several days to make sure.)

If your number is lower than 1500, subtract it from 1500. This number is the amount of mg of calcium deficiency in your diet.   You should make up the difference with a calcium suppliment.

I recommend Calcium Citrate or Calcium Carbonate.  It is important that you check your bottle to see how many pills are equal to one serving.  Check how many mg of elemental calcium are in each serving. The is the amount of mg that you need to suppliment.  (It will probably be several pills).

Spring at last!
